GIS Engagements

oilwell.jpgBG Group

We helped design and implement BG Group's GIS data architecture (including standards, processes and procedures) and developed custom tools to support geoscience specific GIS workflows.

We continue to provide onsite GIS expertise to BG as take-up of GIS within the new ventures arena continues to grow rapidly.

Wintershall Noordzee

A NitroView implementation included the development of bespoke web-based tools such as an online prospect inventory system and map management functionality enabling Wintershall's users to select, add and view raster datasets in the web-based GIS without intervention from the data administration team.

We have also helped set-up Wintershall's desktop GIS and continue to provide GIS expertise and support.

Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited

Following a period of strategic consultancy and data cleanup, NitroView was introduced into Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited's (formally Kerr-McGee North Sea UK Ltd.) IM workflow and revolutionised the way that the E&P user community accessed their oil and gas data.

A desktop GIS rollout followed based on ESRI's ArcGIS which added advanced spatial analysis and geological modelling. We continue to provide bespoke tools and onsite support.

ConocoPhillips

ConocoPhillips provided enhancement ideas and forward development funding to NitroView in order to address their specific functional requirements.  These included integration of NitroView with TeamWorkSpace and Crystal Reports.

Nexen UK

Nexen deployed NitroView as a GIS portal enabling their geoscience community to view data integrated from a number of disparate data sources and to drill down from the web-based GIS interface into other applications such as LiveLink, OpenWorks and several in-house databases.

We continue to maintain existing web-based GIS sites and develop new ones as required.

Petro-Canada

We designed and implemented a desktop GIS solution based on ArcGIS (ArcView and ArcSDE). This included creation of standards, procedures, processes, templates etc. and providing custom tools for data access, as well as a data migration of satellite imagery to ArcSDE.

Tullow Oil

Tullow engaged Exprodat to create a GIS portal that would enable their asset team members to view and drill-down into data from multiple offices around the world via a single map front-end.  The GIS Portal projet was based on NitroView and included data integration with LiveLink.

Information Management Engagements

oilrig.jpgBHP Billiton

BHP Billiton's Integrated Business Development group recognised the need for a general e-business portal to provide a workspace for the globally distributed team. A key requirement was an information hub to provide a single point of access to 3rd party vendor information. Exprodat conducted a 'short, sharp' assessment to map the distribution and usage of 3rd party data and applications; as well as the users, experts and support personnel within the company.

This resulted in specific, pragmatic recommendations on the content, design and construction of the information hub.

BHP Billiton has also appointed Exprodat to provide project management services for their Petroleum Portal project. This project is being implemented by Schlumberger Information Systems, using their DecisionPoint technology running on a Plumtree framework. The project aims to provide simple web access to a range of subsurface geoscience, engineering and production information.

BG Group

Exprodat helped to draft the ITT for the re-outsourcing of the Petrotech service at BG. This function includes application support, data management, infrastructure and cartography. We were also involved in the review and selection process for this.  Following this, Exprodat provided a resource to act as the Business Relationship Manager to manage the Petrotech service at BG for 8 months. In our current capacity we continue to supply data management strategy review and IM program management support services to the BG Group.

Enterprise Oil

Initially involved in the implementation and roll out of the EPDS (E&P Database System) data management project, we continued to contribute to and deliver on Enterprise's information management strategy.

In keeping with Exprodat's 'Web/GIS' IM philosophy, Enterprise's GIS and E&P web portal implementations were fully integrated.  The data portal, 'RAPID', allowed users to view 'live' data from OpenWorks, SeisWorks, ZMap+, Dukpet and Sattlegger, as well as external web data sources, without any knowledge of the underlying databases or applications.  Additionally it provided tools for documenting interpretative data, associating network documents with data items (e.g. linking a well report to a well header), adding documentation & metadata to interpretations, and enabling users to receive automated notification of when data of interest to them had been added or edited. At the core of this technology was the wOW product, developed by Exprodat at Enterprise Oil, and subsequently acquired by Landmark.

Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited

Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited (formally Kerr-McGee North Sea (UK) Ltd.) initiated a Subsurface Data Management improvement process in 2000, and following a current state/future state analysis delivering results in a compressed timeframe, Kerr-McGee appointed Exprodat to manage the delivery of an integrated subsurface IM solution. The project comprised the definition of clear ownership, standards and procedures around data management; implementation of an integrated IM technical framework, including GeoFrame, TerraStation, EDMS and in-house databases; development of a sub-surface E&P portal, delivering key information to the user through a Web browser and onsite data QC and cleanup around key subsurface databases.

OMV

Exprodat was contracted by the EP Division of OMV in Vienna to conduct an independent information management assessment. The scope of the assessment was primarily within the Production department, but with interfaces to Exploration, domestic operations, foreign affiliates and corporate IT. The primary objective of the assessment was to analyse the current state of workflow, dataflow and IT infrastructure, and make recommendations for a future state characterised by improved workflows and productivity, as input into the 1999 budget planning process.

In total about 40 staff members were involved in the questionnaire/interview process, round table discussions and presentations. The major deliverable was a report documenting the current state; a future state vision and principles, and a number of short-, mid- and long-term recommendations around people, process and technology. Although specific results remained confidential, one general conclusion of interest was that the primary challenge facing OMV was more about organisation and process than about the acquisition of technology.

Shell Expro

Shell Expro conducted a data management review within the New Business Directorate (NBD), in order to address the challenge brought about by exponential growth in data volumes, rapid changes in technology, and recent reorganisations. The main objective of the review was to define strategic options for data management within NBD.  Exprodat was contracted to provide an external perspective to the review team, to conduct the bulk of the interviews with NBD staff, and to assist with research and documentation. The resulting strategy document contained options and recommendations for achieving a step change in data management performance, and fed into the development of an Expro Data Management Plan for 1999 and beyond.

This was followed by a second phase of work in 2000. Exprodat formed part of a team of Shell staff tasked with making a real and long-lasting improvement to the way Expro manages E&P data. Over a 90-day period, the team was challenged by senior business sponsors to look at IM from a different perspective. In the first 30 days, the idea was to 'diverge', brainstorming multiple different models and analogs for IM. In parallel, a large proportion of the business community was targeted through interviews for their ideas on the current state and best practice examples. During the 2nd 60-day period, the team converged on a single, intregrated knowledge, information and data (KID) management system, addressing the roles of people, processes and technology in an overall solution. The final phase resulted in the definition of a number of 'rolling ball' implementation projects, ultimately securing close to £6 million in funding over a three-year period.

Shell International

Exprodat and Paras participated in a project aimed at developing and implementing a subsurface software integration strategy for the Shell Group. The work was sponsored by Shell International Exploration and Production research and technical services, based in The Hague. As a major international oil company, Shell both develops its own leading edge software, and purchases applications from a range of software vendors. The challenge facing the company was to allow the seamless integration of its own best-of-breed software with the integration platforms provided by commercial vendors. The project commenced with an Integration Workshop, attended by representatives from the majority of the Group's Operating Units. Exprodat and Paras provided external presentations and facilitation for the event, which concluded with the formulation of a subsurface integration vision and strategy. The next phase consisted of a series of workshops with the major software vendors, with the goal of communicating the strategy, comparing technology, and obtaining vendor commitment to the process. This led to the formulation and presentation of technical and business implementation scenarios.

Wintershall Noordzee

Exprodat assist Wintershall across the whole range of IM, providing strategic, project management, technical and software development services.
