Regional expertise is developed during all exploration & production activities, so petroleum companies with global assets most likely have unique GIS training requirements in each region:

• Local data issues including quality control problems
• Idiosyncratic coordinate reference systems
• Region specific data vendors and data sources
• Language issues

All the while, global companies also want training to be standardised across the organisation, e.g. by using company wide data standards and workflows from head office to their most remote asset.

Without asset-centred training in place, moving staff between assets requires more travel, more training and longer staff orientation programmes.
