Exprodat renames its petroleum ArcGIS training courses

Exprodat has renamed its hugely popular ArcGIS training courses for the oil and gas sector. The reason for the change is to allow users to more easily identify relevant training combinations and create supportive learning pathways

The content of the courses remains unchanged, with the training continuing to provide attendees with techniques and information that enable them to use ArcGIS technology more effectively within exploration and production departments.

Chris Jepps, Technical Director of Exprodat, said “We felt it was time to rename our courses for a number of reasons. Primarily we wanted to clarify our course titles to make it easier for ArcGIS users in the E&P sector to see which courses were applicable to them, whether they’re novice or expert users. We also wanted to make sure we did this using a standard approach that allowed our courses to “plug-and-play” more easily with Esri’s own training classes, to deliver an even better hybrid learning pathway for our customers.”

The new titles take effect from January 2012, with the list of training courses including:

Previous name

New name

Applied ArcGIS Techniques for E&P

ArcGIS Essentials for Petroleum

Managing Coordinate Reference Systems in ArcGIS

ArcGIS Coordinate Reference Systems for Petroleum

Building & Managing a GIS for E&P

ArcGIS Data Management for Petroleum

Basin and Play Analysis using ArcGIS

ArcGIS Basin and Play Analysis for Petroleum

Surface Analysis for E&P

ArcGIS 3D Surface Analysis for Petroleum

Terrain & Image Analysis for E&P

ArcGIS Terrain and Image Analysis for Petroleum

Exprodat provides the highest quality GIS support to oil and gas exploration and production departments around the world. Esri (UK) has recently recognised this with the award of Gold Partner status and by signing an MOU that sees the two companies working closely together to promote petroleum GIS solutions.

If you are interested in knowing more about any of these courses, please contact training@exprodat.com or visit www.exprodat.com/Training.

Exprodat's Acreage Analyst makes ranking oil leases simple on ArcGIS 10

London, United Kingdom, 30th Aug 2011 - Exprodat's Team-GIS Acreage Analyst, a toolkit for evaluating, ranking and screening petroleum leases, opportunities and risks was released today for ArcGIS 10. The new version of Team-GIS Acreage Analyst delivers geospatial analytic tools, traditionally the preserve of the GIS specialist, into the hands of the geoscientist. For further information see http://www.exprodat.com/software/TGAA.

Exprodat's Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, "Team-GIS Acreage Analyst is a unique product that enables geoscientists to automate complex lease or block ranking processes. Companies that use the tool ahead of license rounds like the upcoming BOEMRE Gulf Lease Sale 218 find that it can help them find valuable extra time for working up leads later in the round 'window' by dramatically cutting the time spent on their initial screening processes. Secondly, it allows them to make significantly improved decisions by using easily repeatable data-driven analysis. Finally, it allows managers to validate the decisions they make during lease sale applications.

Acreage Analyst was designed so that geoscientists in oil and gas companies could leverage the analytical power of ArcGIS. As with our Segment Analyst product, you don't need to be a GIS specialist or understand niche GIS terminology in order to use it. We're delighted that the product is now available to all geoscientists working on the ArcGIS 10 platform."

Team-GIS Acreage Analyst is an ArcMap extension for use with conventional and unconventional resource opportunities. The user can evaluate these resources based on the spatial relationships of multi-disciplinary asset data (e.g. geology, environment, economic, infrastructure). It enables geoscientists to define scoring and weighting criteria in order to rank opportunities, perform company analyses and develop portfolio investment strategy.

Using Exprodat's Team-GIS Acreage Analyst companies can streamline the complex process of ranking oil acreage based on multiple factors, gain more time to work on focus areas by rapidly completing first pass acreage screenings, make better decisions faster through quantitative analysis and implement consistent auditable exploration processes across their assets.

Exprodat's Team-GIS software suite helps oil and gas teams harness the power of Esri's ArcGIS platform, by providing 'out-of-the-box' functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector. Team-GIS software is data independent and allows oil and gas companies to integrate vendor data with their own in-house datasets for use in GIS-based spatial analysis in order to make better decisions faster, while managing risk and reducing technical uncertainty.

See our website for further information on Exprodat's Team-GIS Acreage Analyst.

Exprodat Demystifies Basin and Play Analysis on ArcGIS 10

The latest addition to Exprodat's ArcGIS training programme, Basin and Play Analysis using ArcGIS, teaches participants how the powerful tools within ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst can be used to enhance basin analysis and play fairway mapping as part of the process of petroleum exploration. The course is available now for the ArcGIS 10 platform.

Chris Jepps, Exprodat's Technical Director, said "We developed the Basin and Play Analysis course in response to the excellent feedback our 'Play Fairway Mapping' course received from the market. Both courses are essentially a way for oil and gas ArcGIS users to learn how to use ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop and Spatial Analyst tools using petroleum industry data, workflows and best practices, but we felt that while the PFM course served some explorationists well with its focus on specific exploration workflows, the ArcGIS tools could actually be applied more widely.

So the new 'Basin and Play Analysis' course covers more ground, adding ArcGIS-based analyses such as interpolation, creaming curves, field size distributions, license block statistics and migration pathway mapping to a core of play analysis modules like editing, probability mapping and stick plots. If you're an oil and gas geoscientist who wants to learn how to use Esri's ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension for exploration activities, then this is the course for you."

Training is crucial if oil & gas GIS users are to make the most of the investment made in the software. Exprodat are not only able to provide ArcGIS expertise but their staff can uniquely link this with an understanding of how the technology is best used within specialist oil and gas environments.

Any geoscience, engineering or support staff wanting to learn more information about this course should visit http://www.exprodat.com/Training/ or contact Exprodat training staff directly on +44 (0)20 7031 8172.

Exprodat's Team-GIS Segment Analyst brings Geological Risking to ArcGIS 10

London, United Kingdom, 19th July 2011 - Exprodat's Team-GIS Segment Analyst, a toolkit for building common risk segment maps for use in petroleum exploration, was released today for the ArcGIS 10 platform. The new version of Team-GIS Segment Analyst brings powerful geospatial play fairway analysis tools, traditionally the preserve of the GIS analyst, right into the hands of the geoscientist. For further information see http://www.exprodat.com/software/TGSA.

Exprodat's Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, "Team-GIS Segment Analyst was designed with the geoscientist in mind. You don't need to be a GIS specialist or understand niche GIS terminology in order to use the tool. It's the most powerful toolkit for creating common risk segment maps available, and the expanding client base of the software is testament to that. We're delighted that the product is now available to all geoscientists working on the ArcGIS 10 platform."

Team-GIS Segment Analyst is an ArcMap extension for creating conventional and unconventional play fairways. Multiple input layers from disparate sources (e.g. depositional environment, paleogeography, contour maps and grids) can be rapidly assigned numeric risk, probability or chance of success values in order to create maps for key petroleum system elements such as reservoir, source and seal, which can then be combined into common risk segment (CRS) models.

Using Exprodat's Team-GIS Segment Analyst enables exploration teams to better understand play extents, spatial risk distributions, identify 'sweet-spots' and ultimately develop and refine play investment strategy.

For additional information on Exprodat's Team-GIS software please visit www.exprodat.com/Software.

Exprodat's data directory nurtures new ArcGIS Desktop 10 users

Exprodat's Team-GIS Directory was released today for the ArcGIS 10 platform, enhancing usability for ArcGIS Desktop users. Team-GIS Directory can make ArcMap much easier for novice users to operate, increasing the rate of user adoption during ArcGIS Desktop implementation projects. For further information see www.exprodat.com/software/TGD.

Team-GIS Directory is an ArcMap extension combining an easy-to-use data catalogue with powerful search, preview and metadata visualization tools. It is designed to allow spatial data administrators to provide their desktop GIS users with structured access to enterprise GIS data, and to ensure that users can quickly locate data of interest to them and easily add it to their ArcMap project.

Exprodat's Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, "One of the strengths of Team-GIS Directory is that it allows GIS administrators to impose order on the often chaotic morass of GIS data common in many organizations, such as rasters, vector-based datasets and layer files. This means that users don't need to know where the data they are using is physically located, which can make the whole GIS experience much less scary, especially for new users. We find that this can lead to significantly increased take-up when rolling out desktop GIS technology."

Exprodat's Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to Esri's ArcGIS platform that provide 'out-of-the-box' functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector. Team-GIS software is data independent and allows oil and gas companies to integrate vendor data with in-house datasets for use in GIS-based spatial analysis in order to make better decisions, manage risk and reduce technical uncertainty.

Exprodat's "Team GIS" walking team would like to thank all who generously supported them to help raise over £6,000 Oxfam in completing Oxfam's Trailtrekker 2011.

Most of the team completed the 65 km silver course in just under 14 hours. The one team member that did not last the distance completed 39 km over the hardest sections of the course before being forced to retire, despite suffering chronic back pain and hardly being able to walk in the previous week - an heroic effort!

To view the team's times search for "Team GIS" in the event's full results. Note that team positions are reported by the first retiree, not the final finishing point of the rest of the team.

Gareth Smith, Exprodat's Managing Director, said "For the last 8 km the team members retreated to their own individual bubble of pain for varying reasons: hamstring cramps and nausea for myself; Achilles for Ross; and foot pain and grating knees for Danny. I've never been so pleased to see a finish line! We were positioned a respectable 70-73 of 558 walkers who made it as far as checkpoint 3, our finish point.

Thanks for all of you who generously supported us and pushed us well past £6,000 raised for Oxfam. I know you all get bombarded with requests of this type so it's much appreciated. "

Exprodat Holds the Key to the KINGDOM for ArcGIS Users

Exprodat’s Team-GIS KBridge was released today for Esri's ArcGIS 10 platform, continuing to meet the demand for low cost data integration between KINGDOM and ArcGIS. Geoscientists using KBridge can take control of transfers between SMT’s KINGDOM and ArcMap rather than rely on expensive service-oriented integration solutions. For further information see www.exprodat.com/Software/TGK.

Team-GIS KBridge allows geologists and geophysicists to transfer KINGDOM project data to ArcMap, and vice versa. This enables them to integrate their sub-surface interpretation with a wide array of available spatial data and to apply ArcGIS Desktop’s powerful spatial analytical capabilities.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, “It’s amazing that moving data between E&P sub-surface interpretation tools and ArcGIS can still be a challenging, complex and time consuming task. If you’re struggling to move data between KINGDOM and ArcView and can’t afford the more expensive solutions on the market then you should take a look at KBridge – it’s great value at a fraction of the cost.”

Exprodat’s Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop that provide ‘out-of-the-box’ functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector.

Exprodat Consulting’s oil and gas based GIS training courses are now included in the Association for Geographic Information’s (AGI) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.

Exprodat’s ArcGIS training courses are highly regarded by attendees and use petroleum industry workflows, data and best practice to teach E&P professionals how to leverage the power of ESRI’s ArcGIS within their projects. Now these valuable courses come with the added benefit of earning attendees CPD points.

AGI implemented the CPD plan to allow members to keep a certified and formal record of their professional development. CPD points provide everyone, including colleagues and the public, with a recognised scoring system for recording attendance at training courses and other learning exercises. Additionally, the CPD programme can be the first step on the route to a Chartered Geographer qualification, which is recognised by the Royal Geographical Society.

Each Exprodat training course comes with its own number of CPD points and more information can be found on the Exprodat website description for each training course.

Commenting on the tie-up with AGI’s CPD scheme, Jules Cullen, Exprodat’s Director of Sales and Marketing, said "E&P companies are increasingly focused on developing professional disciplines within their organisations, and the petroleum GIS sector is no different. The accreditation of our courses with AGI’s CPD scheme enables participants to get official recognition of their skills development and helps establish a structured career development path.”

To learn more about the CPD scheme, visit the AGI website.

Do More Than Scratch the Surface with Exprodat's Surface Analysis Course

To ensure that our training offerings continue to be the most relevant and offer the best value possible, Exprodat has recently announced the design and release of a new GIS training course; Surface Analysis for E&P.

The new course looks at how raster and vector surface data management and analysis can be used in E&P workflows and what benefits these new terrain models will bring. Increasing the understanding of the terrain of both offshore and onshore scenarios is essential in increasing the accuracy of project decision making. Attendees will also return to their offices with an excellent working knowledge of ArcGIS Spatial Analyst and ArcGIS 3D Analyst desktop extensions.

Chris Jepps, Exprodat's Technical Director, said "We developed the Surface Analysis course in response to the excellent feedback our Terrain & Image Analysis (TIA) course received from the market, and both courses are essentially a way for oil and gas ArcGIS users to learn how to use ESRI's Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions using petroleum industry data, workflows and best practices.

We felt that while the TIA course served explorationists well with its focus on upstream applications, many of the techniques in the course could be more widely applied. So the new Surface Analyst course covers both upstream and downstream applications of the technology, such as using LiDAR data for well pad site mapping, mapping geomorphology for geo-hazard assessment and identifying least cost pathways for onshore activities such as pipeline planning. If you're an oil and gas GIS user who wants to find out about how to use Esri's Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions, then this is the course for you."

Training is vital for GIS users to make the most of their investment in the software and Exprodat are not only able to provide the GIS expertise but their staff understand how the technology is best used within specialist oil and gas environments.

Any geo-science, engineering, HSE professionals or support staff wanting to learn more information about this course should visit http://www.exprodat.com/Training/ or contact Exprodat training staff directly on +44 (0)20 7031 8172.

Exprodat Consulting provides software, consulting services and training courses to exploration and production staff throughout the world’s oil and gas companies.

Exprodat Steals the Show at PETEX 2010 Conference

The recent PETEX 2010 conference saw the oil and gas exploration and production community come together for a week in Earl’s Court. The conference was supported by an extremely well attended exhibition that allowed product and services companies to present their offerings to a combination of oil & gas professionals and recent graduates.

Exprodat Consulting, the leading provider of GIS-based oil & gas solutions attended the conference again this year. This ensured that all clients and prospective customers had a chance to find out the latest news and developments from the company as well as ask questions about how GIS could support their projects.

This year saw Exprodat entertain just as much as they informed. The BATAK machine has been used by Formula 1 drivers, rugby teams and all manner of elite athletes to improve their reaction times, agility and accuracy. BATAK is an array of lights in the form of impact pads that light and only go out once they have been hit by the player. Exprodat gave all PETEX attendees the chance to join illustrious names such as Jenson Button to see what score they could post on the leader board of the most targets hits in thirty seconds.

Over the three days of the conference a tremendous battle ensued that saw scores rise from a respectable 30 to a remarkable 51. This final score was posted by Alex Davies of Svenska and his efforts saw him being presented with an Apple iPad by Exprodat Director Chris Jepps. In case anyone doesn’t believe that Alex was able to post such an incredible score, a video of his efforts can be found on the exprodatgis YouTube channel.

Sales and Marketing Director for Exprodat, Jules Cullen said of the successful exhibition: “PETEX is a great event for meeting with our clients and this year’s stand really allowed people to learn about Exprodat in a fun and relaxed environment.
Exprodat Lowers the KBridge by Adding Subscription Option

Alongside industry-leading GIS consulting and training services for the oil and gas sector, Exprodat provides a range of GIS-based software designed specifically for use in petroleum exploration and production (E&P) departments. One of these is the popular Team-GIS KBridge.

Many E&P organisations use SMT’s KINGDOM software to store, visualise and interpret geophysical data. Much of this information becomes even more valuable when viewed within Esri’s ArcGIS software. Exprodat’s Team-GIS KBridge does exactly what its name suggests by enabling data to pass between the two software products, in both directions.

Following the release of version 202 of Team-GIS KBridge, Exprodat has developed the way companies can access this vital link software. Team-GIS KBridge can now be purchased as a standalone licence, a network licence or as a subscription service. These three levels ensure that all users can find exactly the price-point that matches their requirements.

Exprodat’s sales and marketing director Jules Cullen said “We wanted to make sure that even the smallest of oil and gas companies could benefit from the ArcGIS integration provided by Team-GIS KBridge. Our new pricing has an annual subscription option that significantly lowers the cost of ownership of the tool. For organisations with both SMT’s KINGDOM and Esri’s ArcGIS technologies there’s not a more cost effective way to move data between the two.”

Team-GIS KBridge allows users to transfer their KINGDOM well, culture, planimeter polygon, seismic and interpretation data to ArcMap, and vice versa. Using this data integration tool users are able to deploy the powerful spatial analysis capabilities provided by ArcGIS on their KINGDOM project data.

Exprodat Uses 202 to Hit the Play Fairway Sweet Spot

London, United Kingdom, 11th Oct 2010 - Exprodat has released version 202 of Team-GIS Segment Analyst and for the first time geoscientists are able to rely on a single toolkit to create common risk segment (CRS) maps while mapping play fairways.

The release contains major new functionality including support for raster and contour datasets as inputs, the ability to apply weightings to input layers and a data extraction tool that enables integration with third party applications.

With Team-GIS Segment Analyst version 202, exploration teams will vastly improve their understanding of play risk, enabling them to easily identify the most prospective parts of a play. As well as significantly reducing evaluation cycle times, Team-GIS Segment Analyst provides critical information for informing prospect risking, acreage ranking and portfolio investment decisions.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, said of the recent release; “Team-GIS Segment Analyst started life as a niche tool for converting descriptive geologic data to risk or probability. By adding major new functionality to version 202 we’ve transformed Team-GIS Segment Analyst into the complete toolkit for building common risk segment maps.”

“Features we’ve added include a new module that can convert raster and contour-based proxies into CRS layers, and a data extraction tool to help integration with other systems. The latter is actually the first of several workflow-related enhancements that we’ll be adding over the next 12 months. With this release it’s now even easier to create CRS maps and integrate the results with other play and prospect risking tools.”

Team-GIS Segment Analyst is an ArcGIS Desktop extension for creating CRS maps of basins and play fairways. Multiple input layers such as geological structure, isochore, geochemistry, gross depositional environment or paleogeography can be used as proxies for key play system elements (e.g. source, reservoir and seal) and assigned numeric risk or probability values. These chance of success layers can then be combined mathematically into a CRS (or ‘traffic light’) map.

With Team-GIS Segment Analyst the user can better understand play extents, spatial risk distributions, identify ‘sweet-spots’ and ultimately develop and refine play and portfolio investment strategies.

For further information see http://www.exprodat.com/software/TGSA.

Geo:connexion interviews Exprodat's Technical Director for October 2010 issue

Since its formation, Exprodat has tripled in size and now works for some of the biggest names in the oil and gas industry. Geo:connexion visited their central London offices to talk to technical director Chris Jepps about how the company has developed, current marketplaces and the future.

In the following extract Geo:connexion asks how Jepps sees the use of geospatial technologies developing over the next one or two years:

“I’m certain we’ll see a continuation of the key trends - increasing uptake of GIS across the E&P industry, improving ease-of-use of GIS technology, and improved server and mobile GIS capabilities. I think we’ll still have the two distinct GIS user groups – GIS specialists who use desktop applications to do data management and spatial analysis, and the non-specialists who are happier using web-based GIS technology for data visualisation and query.

One new area I find interesting is the ability to support ‘crowdsourcing’ of data using web-based GIS clients. I’m sure that over the next couple of years we’ll see examples of oil and gas companies using this concept as a way to collate and share data...”

Download the full article for free from Geo:connexion website: An interview with Exprodat.

Paola Peroni, a Senior Consultant with Exprodat, will be presenting a paper entitled "ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst versus G&G Applications: Contour Mapping of Geological Variables" at the 2010 ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, CA, on 13th July, examining how ArcGIS tools compare with established industry mapping packages for 2D contour mapping.

The following information is taken from the paper's abstract:

"Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis, interpolation and evaluation of uncertainty are tasks geoscientists use to derive continuous surfaces from discrete data. G&G packages offer a variety of tools to support data analysis and the interpolation of complex datasets, and are widely used for advanced 2D and 3D modelling. Most GIS packages also include tools which can be effectively used for modelling continuous variables, particularly in a 2D environment.

The role GIS can play in E&P workflows which are considered the “realm” of G&G applications is the basis of a project carried out with the aim of exploring and comparing the 2D contour mapping functionality available in standard G&G packages with that available in ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, and to define workflows where ArcGIS provides a viable alternative to G&G applications for ESDA, interpolation, estimation of uncertainty. A Functionality Matrix summarises the results, scoring elements such as criticality, competence, ease of use."

To find out more please come to Room 28 C at the 2010 ESRI International User Conference on 13th July, at 10:15 am.
Exprodat adds Planimeter Polygon support to Team-GIS KBridge

London, United Kingdom, 25th June 2010 – Exprodat today announces the release of version 202 of Team-GIS™ KBridge, software for converting data between Seismic Micro-Technology’s KINGDOM® and ArcGIS® Desktop from ESRI®. Team-GIS KBridge allows users to transfer their KINGDOM well, culture, planimeter polygon, seismic and interpretation data to ArcMap™, and vice versa. For further information see www.exprodat.com/software/TGK.

Team-GIS KBridge is designed to provide a low cost alternative to heavyweight data integration technologies, enabling end-users to take control of data connectivity rather than rely on enterprise level connections. With this streamlined data integration workflow users are able to deploy the powerful spatial analysis capabilities provided by ArcGIS on their KINGDOM project data.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, “The great thing about Exprodat is that we can be very reactive to customer requirements. Over the last few months our customers have told us that being able to move planimeter polygon data between SMT’s KINGDOM and ArcGIS would be really useful – so we’ve responded rapidly and put out a release of KBridge that supports this unique data type. It’s amazing that integrating data between ArcGIS and the interpretation suites commonly seen within the E&P sector can still be a challenging, complex and time consuming task. With Team-GIS KBridge users can easily import KINGDOM data to their ArcMap session. Data can be imported to shapefile or File Geodatabase formats, and is automatically tagged with ArcGIS metadata.”

Exprodat’s Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop that provide ‘out-of-the-box’ functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector.
Learn about the Role of GIS in Play Analysis at EAGE's Barcelona '10 Conference

Exprodat's Managing Director Gareth Smith will be presenting a paper entitled "The Role of Spatial Integration in Play Analysis" at the EAGE's Barcelona '10 Conference, on 16th June 2010, examining how GIS can be used within oil exploration as an analysis tool.

The following information is taken from the paper's abstract:

"Many companies only use GIS as a simple data integration and visualisation tool, and don‟t exploit its full spatial analysis capabilities. Once data has been collected in a GIS, it is often exported for further analysis in Excel, where the rich spatial trends and relationships inherent in the data are lost. However the spatial analysis functionality that lies at the core of GIS can be used to support the interpretation of large volumes of data and develop quantitative play analysis models. It enables you to develop play risk models review and rank acreage based on large volumes of GIS-based data in an objective, consistent, iterative way.

GIS is emerging as a key component for supporting and improving the exploration process, including risk assessment and opportunity screening and ranking. The key benefits of this approach are:

GIS provides the ideal platform for data integration in the exploration analysis process. Using all the data available, in a consistent fashion, improves our confidence levels in assessing risk and uncertainty.

GIS can significantly reduce the cycle times for an exploration project, especially for manually intensive processes such as data integration, analysis and risk map generation. This time can be used to iterate and refine the models used for ranking opportunities, or to reduce overall project times.

GIS provides a framework for developing consistent exploration processes across all assets within a company. This leads to a more consistent, auditable corporate prospect portfolio, and better portfolio management decisions.

The overall result of reducing technical uncertainty, standardising process and understanding risk is improved decision making and better exploration efficiency. Better prospects will be drilled earlier in a programme, and an improved framework for integrating the results of new wells back in to the regional play risk models will be established."

To find out more please come to Room 123 at the EAGE conference on 16th June, at 9:30 am. For more information on the conference please see the EAGE's Barcelona '10 website.

Exprodat Releases Common Risk Segment Software for Petroleum Play Fairway Analysis

London, United Kingdom, 28th October 2009 – Exprodat today announces the release of Team-GIS Segment Analyst, a toolkit for building common risk segment maps for use in exploration play fairway analysis. With Team-GIS Segment Analyst petroleum E&P companies can improve their understanding of play risk, reduce technical uncertainty and significantly reduce technical evaluation cycle times. For further information see http://www.exprodat.com/software/TGSA.

Team-GIS Segment Analyst is an ArcGIS extension for creating common risk segment maps of basins and play fairways. Multiple input layers from disparate sources (e.g. depositional environment, paleogeography, etc.) can be used as proxies and rapidly assigned numeric risk in order to create risk maps for key play system elements such as reservoir, source and seal, which can then be combined into a common risk segment model. With Team-GIS Segment Analyst the user can better understand play extents, spatial risk distributions, identify ‘sweet-spots’ and ultimately develop and refine play investment strategy.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, “As long ago as 1996 Peter Rose noted that ‘the most difficult and critical decision in petroleum exploration is not which prospect to drill, but which new play to enter’. Helping companies quantify and understand play risk to make better play investment decisions can obviously have tremendous financial ramifications down the line in the petroleum exploration process. Team-GIS Segment Analyst helps geoscientists make better decisions, faster, while allowing E&P organisations to implement consistent and auditable processes through time and across assets.”

”Although Team-GIS Segment Analyst is a new product, an early version of the tools were available as the Common Risk Segment module in our acreage ranking product, Team-GIS Acreage Analyst. We felt that the risk segment tools should be de-coupled from the more heavyweight analytical capabilities of Team-GIS Acreage Analyst as they’re used to solve a different problem, and this in turn has allowed us to be more competitive with both products, price-wise.”

Exprodat’s Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop that provide ‘out-of-the-box’ functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector.
Exprodat Releases Software for Organizing Desktop GIS Data

London, United Kingdom, 26th October 2009 – Exprodat today announces the release of Team-GIS Directory, a unique ArcGIS Desktop tool for organizing and presenting desktop GIS data. Team-GIS Directory allows spatial data administrators to provide users with consistent, structured and intuitive access to spatial data, while providing users with powerful functionality that makes ArcMap much easier to use. For further information see http://www.exprodat.com/software/TGD.

Team-GIS Directory was previously known as Team-GIS Explorer, but has been re-branded as part of Exprodat’s Team-GIS suite’s version 200 release.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, “One of the key strengths of Team-GIS Directory is that it allows Administrators to impose order on the often chaotic morass of GIS data common in many organizations, such as rasters, vector-based datasets and layer files. Administrators can set-up the data architecture and using Team-GIS Directory provide users with a secure and simple way to find the data they need, without the users ever needing to know where the data is physically located.”

“But Team-GIS Directory is not only for data administrators, there are a whole bunch of useful tools for your average desktop GIS user, such as easy-to-use search tools, metadata comparison, and the ability to query and add layers from MXD files without having to open the projects up first. We’ve also made Team-GIS Directory fully compatible with ArcGIS 9.3.1 by provided embedded support for layer packages, which is something you can’t even do in ArcGIS Desktop yet. If you’ve ever been frustrated by ArcMap’s ‘Add Data’ button then you should give Team-GIS Directory a try.”

Exprodat’s Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop that provide ‘out-of-the-box’ functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector. Team-GIS software is data independent and allows E&P companies to integrate vendor data with in-house datasets for use in GIS-based spatial analysis.

ArcGIS is a scalable family of software products comprising a complete geographic information system (GIS) built on industry standards.
Exprodat Releases New Version of Acreage Ranking and Portfolio Analysis Software

London, United Kingdom, 22nd October 2009 – Exprodat today announces the release of version200 of Team-GIS Acreage Analyst, a unique toolkit for performing petroleum block ranking and company portfolio analysis. With Team-GIS Acreage Analyst petroleum E&P companies can dramatically shorten traditionally paper-based workflows in order make data driven decisions and improve exploration portfolio management. For further information see http://www.exprodat.com/software/TGAA.

Team-GIS Acreage Analyst is a powerful extension for ESRI’s ArcGIS that enables geoscientists to analyse acreage based on multi-disciplinary asset data (e.g. geology, environment, economic, infrastructure, etc.) and define scoring and weighting criteria in order to rank opportunities, perform company analyses and develop portfolio investment strategy. With Team-GIS Acreage Analyst companies can reduce technical uncertainty, better understand portfolio risk and make better decisions faster, as well as implement consistent and auditable exploration processes through time and across assets.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, “The primary aims of the version 200 release of Team-GIS Acreage Analyst were three-fold: to enable users to complete an entire ranking workflow within the software, to extend the analysis capabilities and to slash the amount of data preparation required before using the software. As such we’ve added powerful reporting, graphing and data export capabilities, made the scoring schema completely flexible and introduced the concept of ‘showstopper’ criteria.”

“We’ve also added a host of new analytical features such as on-the-fly filters and the ability to sub-divide the base acreage layer into a user-defined grid, allowing geoscientists to analyse large areas such as international blocks or even entire countries at their chosen resolution. With the additional improvements that we’ve made to performance it is now possible to shorten a process that manually would have taken weeks into just a few minutes. We believe that this will enable E&P companies doing regional-scale analysis to rapidly perform block ranking iterations which will significantly improve their final decision quality.”

Exprodat’s Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop that provide ‘out-of-the-box’ functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector. At Exprodat, because we believe that using GIS technology can significantly lower costs and improve decision making, we know that training is anything but ‘non-essential’. Participants in our training courses provide their organizations with an immediate return on their training investment. We help E&P staff work ‘work smarter’ with GIS increasing productivity, reducing errors and creatively identifying new ways of working.”

“We’ve responded to the economic downturn in three ways: firstly, we have condensed some of our courses from three days to two days in order to minimise the amount of time a participant spends away from their desk, as well as reduce costs by as much as a third! Secondly, we’ve reduced the cost of daily subscription to a flat rate across all our courses which makes our advanced courses even more cost effective. Finally, we have increased our capacity to deliver onsite classroom based training in order to overcome the travel restrictions many of our customers face.”

Exprodat’s E&P focused ArcGIS training courses are based on a broad experience of the applications of GIS within the petroleum sector, gained through working on many projects with clients. The training programme includes classes in how to apply GIS techniques to common E&P workflows like acreage analysis, play fairway analysis, environmental assessment, gridding and geostatistics, terrain modeling and satellite image analysis. A full list of available classes and a course schedule is available here.

Exprodat’s introductory ‘Applied ArcGIS Techniques for E&P’ course was the first of its kind in the oil and gas sector, and Exprodat has built on its early successes with this course by developing an entire training programme focused on applying ArcGIS technology to exploration and production workflows. Exprodat’s courses are hands-on training that provide ‘learning by doing’. TAP certified (www.tap-training.com) instructors on all courses ensure interactive small class learning environments that provide participants with ArcGIS skills and knowledge needed for projects back at the office.

For additional information on Exprodat’s ArcGIS training for E&P professionals use the 'More Information' link at the bottom of this page.

Exprodat to Preview Acreage Ranking/Common Risk Software at EAGE Conference

London, United Kingdom, 3rd June 2009 – At EAGE’s ‘Amsterdam '09’ conference, running from 8th to 11th June 2009, Exprodat (www.exprodat.com) will be previewing version 200 of its unique petroleum block ranking and portfolio analysis tool, Team-GIS Acreage Analyst, as well as Team-GIS Segment Analyst, a powerful new software application for building common risk segment maps for exploration play fairway analysis.

Team-GIS Acreage Analyst is a powerful extension for ESRI’s ArcGIS that rapidly evaluates and grades oil and gas opportunities. It can be used to reduce technical uncertainty, better understand portfolio risk, reduce technical evaluation cycle times and make better decisions faster, as well as to implement consistent and auditable exploration processes through time and across assets. With Team-GIS Acreage Analyst the user can integrate multi-disciplinary asset data (e.g. geology, environment, economic, infrastructure), perform basin/play data integration and summation, define ranking criteria and weighting, rank acreage, identify opportunities, perform company analyses and develop portfolio investment strategy.

Team-GIS Segment Analyst is an ArcGIS extension for creating common risk segment maps of basins and play fairways. Multiple input layers from disparate sources (e.g. depositional environment, paleogeography, etc.) can be rapidly assigned numeric risk values to create component risk maps for key play system elements such as reservoir, source and seal, which can then be combined into a common risk segment model. With Team-GIS Segment Analyst the user can better understand spatial risk distribution and play extents, identify new opportunities and ‘sweet-spots’ and develop play investment strategy.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says, “Our version 200 products feature a whole host of improvements over previous versions. For a start we’ve improved Team-GIS Acreage Analyst beyond recognition by dramatically extending its capabilities with new features such as a graphing and reporting module, completely flexible scoring as well as powerful new analysis capabilities. The primary aims of this release were three-fold: to enable users to complete an entire ranking workflow within the software, to extend the analysis capabilities and to slash the amount of data preparation required before using the software.”

”Team-GIS Segment Analyst is a new product, comprising tools based on the Common Risk Segment module from Team-GIS Acreage Analyst. We felt that these tools should be separated from the heavyweight analytical capabilities of Team-GIS Acreage Analyst as they’re applicable to a different phase of the exploration lifecycle, and in turn this has allowed us to be more competitive with both products, price-wise. We’ll be officially releasing them later this summer but if you’re coming to the conference please stop by our booth (#167) for a preview. As an experiment this year we’ll also be posting updates from the EAGE on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/exprodatgis), so if you can’t make the conference you’ll still be able to see what we’re up to.”

‘Amsterdam ‘09’ is the 71st annual EAGE Conference & Exhibition, and will be held from the 8th to 11th June 2009 at Amsterdam RAI, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The theme of this year’s conference is "Balancing Global Resources" - particularly relevant to the E&P industry where the discovery, exploitation and disposal of resources must be tackled globally. More details are available at http://www.eage.org/.

ArcGIS is a scalable family of software products comprising a complete geographic information system (GIS) built on industry standards. ArcGIS is used for the creation, management, integration, analysis, display, and dissemination of spatial data. Visualization, editing, and analysis, along with advanced data management, distinguish the ArcGIS software family as the leading GIS software. Much more than a specialized offering for a small niche of specialists, ArcGIS is designed as a scalable system that can be deployed in every organization, from an individual desktop to a globally distributed network of people.

For additional information on Exprodat’s software use the 'More Information' link at the bottom of this page.

Exprodat Launches New ArcGIS Training Courses for Petroleum Professionals

Exprodat announces the launch of two new Petroleum GIS training courses: ‘Play Fairway Mapping with ArcGIS’ and ‘Building and Managing an E&P GIS’. The new courses are the latest additions to Exprodat’s Geospatial Training Programme for E&P, a series of classroom based training modules designed to help oil and gas geoscientists benefit by applying GIS technology to common petroleum workflows. More details are available at http://www.exprodat.com.

Exprodat’s introductory ‘Applied ArcGIS Techniques for E&P’ course was the first of its kind in the oil and gas sector, and Exprodat has built on this success by developing an entire training programme focused on applying ArcGIS technology to exploration and production workflows. The latest courses to be added to the programme provide additional opportunities for oil and gas companies to increase productivity through improving the skills and competencies of their staff.

Exprodat’s Training Manager, Chris Skelly, says, “The ‘play fairway’ course is a workflow based course in which participants are introduced to how geospatial tools can be used to revolutionize traditionally paper-based workflows. Meanwhile the ‘building and managing’ course allows participants to develop data management skills that enable confident ArcGIS desktop users to create and manage spatial data according to best practice.”

“Both use the sort of data that E&P professionals will be familiar with because we want to help them hit the ground running with GIS when they get back to their day jobs. The exercises and course materials are great, but I believe that it is the quality of our trainers, who have a rare combination of knowledge in both GIS and geoscience, that makes our training events valuable and unique.”

Exprodat’s E&P industry focused ArcGIS training courses are based on wide experience of the applications of GIS within the petroleum sector, gained through working on a multitude of projects with a wide array of clients. The instructor led classroom-based courses are designed to be as short as possible so that the attendees spend the minimum amount of time away from their 'day jobs'. The courses are delivered as a combination of presentations, demonstrations, case studies and hands-on exercises, and in order to maintain the quality of the classes Exprodat’s trainers are TAP certified (www.tap-training.com).

ArcGIS extensions such as ArcGIS Spatial Analyst and ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst extend the functional capabilities of the ArcGIS Desktop products, which include ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo. GIS users worldwide can use ArcGIS and extensions to maximize the potential benefits of geographic information and address specific GIS application requirements.

For additional information on Exprodat’s ArcGIS training for E&P professionals use the 'More Information' link at the bottom of this page.

Exprodat Releases White Paper on Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis for Petroleum GIS Sector

Exprodat releases white paper entitled "Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis—Optimizing Interpolation of E&P Datasets" for use by Petroleum exploration and production (E&P) sector geoscience and GIS professionals. The paper, which can be downloaded for free from our Members page, explains techniques for selecting suitable interpolation methods for creating accurate surface models using Geographical Information System (GIS) technology.

Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) is a group of techniques used to describe and visualize spatial distributions, to highlight patterns affecting the distribution of observations and to identify outlier values. Each interpolation technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the characteristics of the input dataset. ESDA techniques provide the GIS user with guidance on how to decide which interpolation method to use when gridding and contouring data.

The techniques in Exprodat’s white paper were first presented at ESRI’s 2009 Petroleum User Group (PUG) Conference (www.esri.com/events/pug/) in Houston, Texas. By publishing the white paper Exprodat are now able to share the full results of their research with the wider oil and gas GIS community.

Exprodat’s Managing Director, Gareth Smith, says, “Geoscientists are commonly faced with the problem of selecting the most appropriate gridding algorithm when generating grids. Often, they’ll just select the defaults provided in their E&P mapping tools without understanding the implications of their choices. Our research in this area shows that GIS, when used alongside traditional mapping packages, provides powerful tools for evaluating data in order to make these key decisions correctly.”

“Choosing an interpolation method for the type of phenomenon the geoscientist is trying to model, and one that fits the distribution of the data in hand, should not just be a matter of luck - they need to understand the spatial behavior of the phenomenon they are investigating, and need to answer to some critical questions before attempting to apply any interpolation technique. This can help produce defendable results that reflect a deep understanding of the way the phenomenon of interest varies spatially. It also helps us to quantify the uncertainty in the modeling.”

In this paper Exprodat focuses on the use of ESDA techniques available in ESRI’s ArcGIS platform and on guiding the user in choosing a suitable interpolation method among the many available in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst and ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst.

For further details and to download the paper, please see our Members page.

Exprodat releases Team-GIS Acreage Analyst 9.2

Team-GIS Acreage Analyst is a data independent ArcGIS play fairway and acreage ranking extension that enables you to rank acreage based on large volumes of GIS-based data, including common risk segment analysis.

Manual processes for performing certain E&P analyses are resource and time intensive and as such they are often done incorrectly and inconsistently, if at all. ArcGIS provides excellent tools for geospatial analysis of complex datasets, but none are packaged into easy-to-use tools or for E&P specific workflows.

Team-GIS Acreage Analyst transforms time-consuming and complex opportunity ranking workflows into rapid, repeatable and consistent processes that can be iterated, shared across whole organisations and compared through time, without needing to gain an in-depth knowledge of ArcGIS.

Use Team-GIS Acreage Analyst to perform common risk segment analysis, prospect ranking, acreage and basin analysis, portfolio analysis and rapidly grade and evaluate potential opportunities.

When analysis is streamlined using fast & repeatable GIS techniques, the results are that:

Interpretation time is gained by automation of complex manual processes

Decision quality is enhanced through analysis iteration

Value is gained from ability to standardise ranking processes across organisation and time

To learn more about Team-GISTM Acreage Analyst, please use the 'More Information' link at the bottom of this page.

Exprodat's Chris Jepps presents at PESGB Data Management Conference

Exprodat's Chris Jepps this week presented a paper entitled "A Survey of GIS Use in the E & P Industry" at the PESGB Data Management Conference at the Geological Society in London, UK.

Abstract

Spatial information is a key element in any petroleum venture, from the initial opportunity analysis and exploration, through appraisal, production and the abandonment phase. It is generally estimated that over 80% of the data used in the Exploration and Production (E & P) upstream business has a spatial component, implying that it can be accessed through a map.

However, despite growing maturity in underlying GIS technology and increasing industry awareness, it is perceived that the spatial component of data is still under-utilised. Many E & P companies are struggling to define the role of GIS in their business. Most see GIS as a specialist role rather than an integrated part of their business and few companies are extracting maximum value from their investment in spatial data and analysis systems.

In addition, evidence shows that many E & P businesses are not using geospatial information technology standards. Advantages to using standards can include improved data and system interoperability, unlocking spatial data from isolated GIS applications and leveraging IT investments in unforeseen and effective ways.

In E&P, while it can be seen that many companies have committed to GIS technology (e.g. they receive many data sources direct in GIS format and have invested heavily in GIS technology, predominantly from ESRI), these companies (often by their own admission) lack both the competency and also the vision to fully leverage GIS analysis as a core part of their decision making.

This may well be because the companies in question have not developed a coherent GIS strategy. Without having a suitable GIS strategy in place it is difficult to build on past GIS projects and as a result many GIS initiatives stall at an early stage, either because the early efforts were not implemented or scoped in such a way as to meet true business needs or because the organisation lacked a clear road map as to how to take the initiatives forward.

This presentation outlines a strategy model that has been developed using Exprodat’s years of experience of working with GIS technology in E & P companies of varied sizes and goals. The model can be applied in a technology independent, scalable way, able to meet the needs of any size of organisation. In addition, the results of a recent study into GIS maturity within E & P companies are presented and discussed.

Full Presentation

The full presentation can be downloaded here (requires site registration).

'The Role of GIS in the E & P Business' Study Now Available

Exprodat is pleased to announce the publication of a sponsored multi-client review that analyses “The Role of Geographic Information Systems in the E & P Industry”. For details on how to purchase the report please use the 'More Information' link at the bottom of this page.

The review is based on Exprodat’s many years of practical experience in applying GIS technology in the E & P business, supplemented through extensive research of published materials, vendor interviews and client participation. It focuses on analysing the role of GIS in E & P organisations and proposing strategic thinking for making the most of a company’s spatial information and integrating it with existing corporate data management systems. In addition, the report evaluates how oil companies, vendors and data suppliers are adding value to the E & P business using GIS technology to support a more informed decision-making process.

This study is made up of the following sections:

Section One: Strategy & Trends

Section Two: Technology Review

Section Three: E & P GIS Maturity Matrix

Section Four: Case Studies

“Spatial information is a key element in any petroleum venture, from the initial opportunity analysis and exploration, through appraisal, production and the abandonment phase. It is generally estimated that over 80% of the data used in the Exploration and Production (E & P) upstream business has a spatial component, implying that it can be accessed through a map.

Due to the nature of the petroleum industry, large amounts of data have to be managed in order to cope with the complexity of the process of discovering new resources and managing producing assets. As such, the E & P upstream business requires the analysis of many different types of spatial data (e.g. surface and sub-surface geology, cross-section interpretation, geophysical surveys, exploration and production drilling, environmental and infrastructure data, satellite imagery), often achieved using a GIS (Geographic Information System).

There has been major progress in recent years in integrating spatial information systems with existing data management and interpretation systems, to the extent that Geographic Information Systems have started to become a critical part of the technology employed in the E & P business.

However, despite growing maturity in underlying GIS technology and increasing industry awareness, it is perceived that the spatial component of data is still under-utilised. Many E & P companies are struggling to define the role of GIS in their business. Most see GIS as a specialist role rather than an integrated component of the business and few companies are extracting maximum value from their investment in spatial data and analysis systems.

How much of their spatial data are E & P companies using effectively?
