Building a Digital Twin within the ArcGIS Platform – Part I

Many organizations are interested in the ‘Digital Twin’ – a computer-based replica of a physical asset onto which other data can be layered to derive insight: from understanding the asset’s current status to modelling potential changes. The scale of the asset being modelled can vary – in this project we’re looking at individual buildings, but the concept can be extended to the scale of a city and beyond – the live traffic data layered upon the digital road…

Four things you didn’t know about our ArcGIS Pro training

2020 is the year when people are finally “going Pro”. Many of our customers have been running ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro in parallel for some time. But in the last few months we have seen a marked increase in the pace of companies migrating from ArcMap to Pro.   At Exprodat we have also experienced this with a busy start to the year with our ArcGIS Pro training courses, and especially our virtual training offering. Anyone who’s made the transition from ArcMap to…

When scale bars don’t scale

Traditionally, scale bars are based on the origin point of the map’s coordinate reference system (CRS), commonly the intersection of the equator and Prime Meridian. Many users don’t realise that the scale bar may be inaccurate due to the distortions that occur with any map projection.  In ArcGIS Pro, this inaccuracy can be reduced with the “Compute at center” property, though not entirely corrected for every map     Not all…

How Tectonic Motion is affecting your Map Accuracy

On our dynamic Earth, continents don’t sit still. They slowly move around the planet, stretching oceans and lifting mountain ranges. Sure, it’s not like you risk being overtaken by Africa on your commute. Tectonic movements average a couple of centimetres per year – about the same speed as the growth of your fingernails.  But over time, things add up. And it’s beginning to impact the accuracy of geospatial data.    Why your maps are probably out of place  Every map…
